It’s 1843, the first type writer is patented, ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens is published and Mount Etna erupts in Italy. It’s also the year when Yale was established in a small shop in New York, USA.

To mark the occaision, Yale has a range of activities taking place including social media competitions and an internal awards initiative to celebrate the staff who have helped the brand get where it is today.

Kate Clark, Managing Director for Yale EMEA, said: “175 years of Yale is a milestone worthy of celebration. Yale is one of the oldest brands in the home security market and its longevity highlights the trust and confidence customers have in the brand.

“Throughout our birthday celebrations we have lots of promotions taking place so make sure you visit our website to get the latest information and offers.”

First founded by the Yale family in the 19th century, Linus Yale Sr. began work on a range of high security bank locks, patenting his first Combination Lock in 1843. However, it was only in 1850 when their son Linus Yale Jr. joined the company that progress really began, patenting the famous pin tumbler cylinder lock in 1857 which helped create the Yale we know today.

During the following century, Yale would become a globally known brand, designing and manufacturing security solutions for commercial and residential buildings. 175 years on since Yale began, over 125 countries now stock Yale products and the company has branched out from traditional door locks, to a portfolio that now includes window hardware, padlocks and safes.

One of the more recent product additions is the introduction of the Smart Living range in 2016. Connected technology is shaping the home security landscape as demand for devices that can be controlled remotely increases. This includes Smart Door Locks that give you the freedom to secure your home without the need to carry keys. With a Smart Door Lock from Yale, you can open your door in a variety of ways, including PIN code, fingerprint reader, remote fob and even your smartphone using a digital key.

As will all products, the Smart Living range carries the Yale logo, a mark which has become a symbol of quality for the home security market and is just as well known amongst homeowners as the products it makes.

Celebrations will be taking place across the globe as the brand looks back at its rich heritage and explores the emerging connected security industry.
